Independence day celebration with People Living with HIV or AIDS

I organized Independence Day program and conducted group activities for the HIV infected people in Jeevan Mukthi near Guru Datta bhavan

Objective:

To reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by the HIV infected people and make them to participate in social function.

To reach the above mentioned objective I planned to conduct Independence Day celebration program for HIV infected. I approached Jeevan Mukthi, the network for People Living with HIV or AIDS and explained the intention behind conducting the program. They agreed to conduct the program but they do not have fund to conduct this program. I decided to find out sponsor for fund.

I went to KIMS hospital along with Mr. Panduranga, Cohort 3 fellow. First I approached the doctor, ART center, KIMS hospital, Hubli. He did not agree to provide the fund. Then I approached the Medical superintendent he also did not agree. Then I visited Principal’s chamber but he was not in the chamber. We waited for half an hour. As we were given permission only 3 hours to organize our program I did not had much time to wait for him. Then I decided that it was not possible to find the sponsor in a short period of time and decided to raise fund from the public.

First I approached a female student of KIMS campus. She wanted to give money but she did not have money with her. It encouraged me to raise fund from the public. I was able to collect 185 rupees. Because of shortage of time I went back to class. My estimated budget was 750 rupees. I thought it is impossible to collect the fund. Evening again I went with Mallamma. G and Amith for fund raising. I was able to raise 230 rupees. By that time I approached some shop owners to provide snacks to the participants. In one hotel the brother of hotel owner said to come morning. So, I went morning and approached him for snacks. He agreed to provide Idli for 30 participants.

On August 15th the program was started at 9.00am. Dr. Sajjan, Family welfare officer hosted the flag and gave the guest speech. He said that, “Now HIV is becoming common as other diseases like Swine flu has entered India”. He also said that “The person who is infected by H1N1 should wear the mask, not the other people.”

Then games like musical chair and pick and act was conducted to the participants. Participants were very happy that they forgot all the worries for a moment. Then Mr. Sudarshan, President of Jeevan mukhi gave vote of thanks to all the participants.
